An all-knowing interlocutor guides us through a series of affairs in Vienna, 1900. A soldier meets an eager young lady of the evening. Later he has an affair with a young lady, who becomes a maid and does similarly with the young man of the house. The young man seduces a married woman. On and on, spinning on the gay carousel of life.

塞莱丝汀（让娜·莫罗 Jeanne Moreau 饰）从巴黎来到法国乡村当家庭女仆，她发现女主人蒙泰尔夫人（弗朗索瓦丝·吕加涅 Fran?oise Lugagne 饰）冷漠自私，不让丈夫近身；而男主人蒙泰尔先生（米歇尔·皮寇利 Michel Piccoli 饰）欲火旺盛，只能靠打猎发泄；女主人的父亲（让·奥泽恩 Jean Ozenne 饰）态度和蔼，却是个恋足癖。管家约瑟夫（乔治斯·格莱特 Georges Géret 饰）对塞莱丝汀恶声恶气，邻居退伍上尉马格（丹尼尔·埃文奈尔 Daniel Ivernel 饰）看不上蒙泰尔一家，日日滋事…… 正当塞莱丝汀打算离开乡村重返巴黎之时，一件意外的命案却让她改变了主意…… 　　本片获捷克卡罗维发利国际电影节最佳女主角奖（让娜·莫罗）。
